It's been two weeks since the anime
adaptation for Goblin Slayer have started and it has been riddled with controversy. However, while people bitch and complain about the rape content, i'm here bitching and complaining how the anime cut so many corners from the original source material that it cheapens the selling point of the entire series.
To put it into context, recall a movie you thoroughly enjoyed before and if you were forced to shrink its running time to 20+ minutes, what parts of that movie will you remove?
Just to give an example, one of the recent blockbuster hit that people loved lately would be Marvel's Infinity War. It has a good mix of humor, action, and progression. Now if I were to shrink it to a 20 minute runtime, i'd remove the humor entirely and remove some bits of progression. That will give me a sunmarized format of that movie in under 20 mins but it would have lost its soul in the process.
And that's the treatment that Goblin Slayer was given. In their attempt to make an episodic progression of the entire plot, the series has lost its soul.
For instance, the adventurer party in the light novel and manga had separate backstories not shown in episode 1 of the anime. By revealing to the audience each character's motivation, their goals and aspirations, we are able to form a bond with them; we are able to connect and relate to them so that when we see them fail and die, we too, a part of us, dies with them.
Their horrendous fate anguishes us and deep inside, we cry for justice. That's why Goblin Slayer's arrival had more impact. He is the catharsis that we need from the tension that the plot have woven.
Another event would be the party that went after the goblins nesting in an elven stronghold in episode 2. This party's members are actually skilled: making use of their scout to detect enemies and traps and employed tactics to infiltrate the stronghold. However, they were done in when their emotions got the best of them, triggering a trap which allowed the goblins to corner them.
The moral of the story for this particular event is that no matter how prepared you are, one moment of letting emotions cloud your judgment will cost you. Not to mention, that the event gives another angle to the goblins' cunning and that they are able to understand and act upon human emotions, using it to their advantage.
In conclusion, as a Goblin Slayer fan, this adaptation is turning out to be a letdown. Don't get me wrong though. The animation is good (the cg isn't THAT bad), more so, the voice cast IS stellar.
But the way the episodes are handled and the 12 episodes per season (instead of a 24 episode run, dedicating at least 2 episodes per event) is shoddily done.
